2. Sissy and the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria
Sissy was born on December 24, 1837 in Munich, Bavaria. She was the daughter of Duke Maximilian and Maria Ludowika who was
Daughter of the Bavarian king.
Sissy grew up in the castle of Possenhofen far away from the protocol and ceremonies of ancient dynasties. That helped Sissy
to develop herself with his brothers and sisters as a very independent, sensitive and freedom loving person.
The Emperor Franz Josef of Austria was supposed to marry Sissy’s sister, Helene. Sissy who had accompanied her mother and
sister rather accidentally, met in an unexpected way the Emperor Franz Josef in the summer of the year 1853 in the town
Bad Ischl.
When the Emperor Franz Josef met Sissy who was only 15 years old, he fell in love with her and defied his mother’s marriage
plan with Helene, Sissy’s old sister and celebrate his engagement with Sissy one day after their first encounter. They
married on 24th April 1854 in the Augustine Church of Vienna.
